1894-1986. English feminist, who married
Bertrand Russell 1921. The `openness' of
their marriage (she subsequently had children
by another man) was a matter of controversy.
She was a founding member of the National
Council for Civil Liberties in 1934. She was
educated at Girton College, Cambridge, of
which she became a Fellow. In 1927 the
Russells founded the progressive Beacon Hill
School in Hampshire. After World War II she
actively supported the Campaign for Nuclear
Disarmament.
